The 11 artists in "The Russians Are Here" have been influenced by their native land and by their adopted home. They present a wide array of techniques, styles and themes. Constantine Gedal's surreal sensibilities clothed in rich Renaissance techniques. The eternal characteristics of women, set in their natural environment as depicted by Julia Koslyansky's oil paintings. Helen Lurye's vibrant, quilt-like paintings filled with heroic and mythological symbolism. Phantasmagoric driftwood sculptures by Robin Pogrebitskiy. Alexander Richter's playfully clever screen paintings. The characters that inhabit the world of Dmitry Romanovsky's canvases are at the same time strange yet familiar. The classic lines and symmetry of Izabella Slobodoff's sculpture. Gita Vavelenkova's beautiful handcrafts. Dramatically composed photographs of the American desert by Yuri Yurov. Bold angles mark the ceramic and cement figures of Eugene Zanis. Challenging and hypnotic, the surreal oil paint harlequins of Victor Zinuhov command the viewer's eye. Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Ukraine, Azerbaijan. Artists from varied places in the same country. Varied creative impulses, media, techniques fed by a shared Russian soul. Schooled in the same tradition, which insists upon years of training and technical expertise, allowing the artist to grow and explore in whatever direction he or she wishes.

"The Russians Are Here" is a unique opportunity to examine the creativity of 11 Russian artists whose work has been influenced by tradition and revolution; by shared and dissimilar roots; by an old country and a new country. They have been brought together in one place at one time for one exhibition, on view at sTudio 6, Fort Tilden, GNRA.
