Weiner Knocks Bush On COPS

Weiner Knocks Bush On COPS

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released statistics showing that virtually every violent crime, including murder and rape, are on the rise. Congressman Anthony Weiner, who is the sponsor of legislation to re-authorize the Community Oriented Policing Services (C.O.P.S.) program, issued the following statement.

"No one in their right mind would look at the rising crime rate, terrorists on the march, and the madness that gripped Maryland over the past few weeks, and call for less police on the beat.

"But that's exactly what President Bush would do by cutting C.O.P.S., the federal government's best crime fighting program and one that's put more than 100,000 police officers on the street.

"It is hard to draw any conclusion other than that President Bush wants to cut C.O.P.S. because it's a Clinton-era Democratic program.  It's time for President Bush to stop playing politics with public safety and get behind C.O.P.S."
