Weiner Issues Statement On NTSB Hearing

On Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) opened public hearings into the crash of American Airlines Flight 587.  Rep. Anthony, who represents the community of Belle Harbor, which was the site of the crash, issued the following statement:

"Little more than one year ago, a quiet Belle Harbor morning was shattered by the crash of American Airlines Flight 587.  I lost five of my constituents that day, and hundreds more perished aboard the aircraft.  Families of the victims, the people of Belle Harbor, and the Rockaways themselves still bear the scars.

"The next five days should provide us with new, important insights into why the terrible tragedy happened that day.   In our search for answers, it's imperative for engineers and aviation experts to continue their hard look at airplane rudder design, certification standards, and manufacture, as well as the dangers of wake turbulence, airworthiness inspection procedures, and the training of pilots.

"We can only hope that this will bring us one step closer to closure for those who lost loved ones.  But even more important, it reflects our commitment to achieving what must be the lasting legacy of the crash: better, safer airplanes."
