SFDS Preps for CYO Cross-Country Championships

Autumn temperatures have cooled but the competition has heated up for the St. Francis de Sales CYO Cross-Country team as it prepares for the Diocesan Championships. Running is an individual endeavor but cross-country is a team effort.

On Sunday, October 20th, SFDS competed in the Sectional Championships in Alley Pond Park. In the Sectional Championships, the thirteen competing parishes were divided into two sections, Black and Yellow. SFDS competed in the Black section against powerhouses Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Thomas More. Scoring works as follows: the places of the top three finishers from each team in a race are added. The team with the lowest total is champion; the next lowest score is second, etc. Also, individual medals were awarded to the top 15 runners from each section in each race. The SFDS runners focused on running strong and passing as many competitors as they could on the way to the finish line.

Official results of the Sectional Championships will not be available until next Sunday. However, in-house scoring by Mary Beth and Laura indicate the Junior Girls and the Bantam Boys teams won gold Sectional Championships. The Junior Boys and Novice Girls teams won silver medals.

The Junior Girls won their Sectional Championship by Shinanne Featherston continuing her winning streak and capturing the gold medal. Tara Mullen placed third and Zoe Piccolo, who gets faster with each race, placed seventh. Sarah Donahue, Anne McCaffrey, Susan Richter, Michelle Kenel, and Annie Werner, all won medals.

All the laps around the Beach Channel track, running the hill on the Cross Bay Bridge, the races in Alley Pond Park, it all culminates for the SFDS runners on Sunday, October 27th with the Diocesan Championships. So runners, tell the soccer coach you can’t miss the championship race. Be sure to turn your clocks back and get that extra hour’s sleep. And be ready to run your best race at high noon on Sunday. Check out www.stfrancisdesalesparish.org for official results of the October 6th meet.
