St Thomas More Captures Three Sectional Championships

St Thomas More Captures Three Sectional Championships

Some of the "Great Expectations" hoped for by the STM coaching staff were diminished by soccer and basketball conflicts and high school open houses but…. some very spunky runners stepped up and help STM capture Three CYO Sectional Black Division Championships in the Bantam Girls and Novice Boys and Girls divisions. Team medals were awarded to the top three teams with 15 individual medals given in each race.

The first time running senior boys (with much thanks to Shawn Egan moving up to complete this team) opened the day. Dylan Dombrowski captured 2nd place running 6:24 for the 1.25-mile senior course. Dylan who holds the STM records on the Bantam and Junior courses moves into 2nd place on the all time senior list. Shawn Egan’s (7:05 5th) and Burke Doran’s (7:15 6th) almost caught Our Lady of Lourdes 11– 13.

The Junior Boys looked like a lock to win the title after last week’s first, fifth and sixth place finishes but some of the boys were visiting high schools. Daniel Lee finished 3rd in 5:19 over the .8 of a mile course moving into third place on the all time STM list. Robert Klein (5:26) finished fifth and is now fifth on the STM list. Thomas McNoble (5:54 15th), Stephen Henderson (6:26 21st) and Joe Drennan (6:39 24th) completed the 3rd place team finish. (OLL 12 – SFDS 16 – STM 23). Linda Maloney was our lone junior girl finishing 24th in 8:01.

Cindy Henderson’s (3:45) first place finish on the half-mile course led STM to an eight-point triumph over OLL (8-16). Justina Morgan improved her best by 17 seconds to capture the 2nd place silver medal (4:05). Brianne Kelly (4:18 5th), Brittany Schafer (4:27 9th), Julie Maloney 4:39 13th) and Kristin Corral (4:48 17th) completed this championship team.

The novice boy’s finished first, second and third and shut out the Black division with a perfect 6 point score. Jack Kane (3:36) won his third consecutive race. Kane was closely followed by Patrick Egan (3:41 2nd), and Sean McNoble (3:42 3rd). Other team gold medal winning novice runners were:Danny Hessman (4:48), and James Morgan (5:19).

The Bantams run last each week. Kara Egan captured a gold medal with 4:33 performance on the .7 mile course. Emma Devlin (4:45 4th ), Louise Duffy (4:56 5th ), Lauren Katen (5:27 13th) and Rebecca McCarthy (6:07 19th) all earned team gold medals. James Boyhan led our bantam boys with his 4:46 11th place finish. Mark Caputo (4:54 13th), Liam Anderson (5:36 22nd), Patrick Cusack (5:40 23rd) and Steven Taikina (5:54 26th) rounded out our bantam team.

The St Thomas More Cross Country team had a solid day winning three individual gold medals, two second place silver medals and 20 overall individual medals. STM also won seventeen gold team medals, three silver team medals and five bronze team medals. Now that the high school open houses are complete and hopefully less soccer and basketball conflicts scheduled – St Thomas More looks to next Sunday’s Diocesan Championships with "High Hopes".
