Lady Seahorses Track Team Strives For Championship Heights

The Far Rockaway High School Lady Seahorses Track Team are the two time indoor and outdoor champions. Blessed with great sprinters and great talent in the most of the other events, they have been dominating the rest of the Queens.

Cross Country however was another story. The distance program had been sporadic at best. Every and now then, they would sneak into a 5th or 6th place finish at the Boro's Freshman or Sophomore Championships and never finished higher than 5th in the Boro championships.

This year, that has all changed.

The girls started working hard real early by going to the cross-country camp at Independent Lake in the Poconos and have not slowed down. The biggest weapon is our depth. Coach Mike Gliner and Larry Parrish have so many good runners that they have not yet chosen the 7 starters for the Varsity Boro Championships next week.

The freshman champions saw the girls finish a best ever third place. Carrie Hines, Quanaisha Vaval, Whitney Henry, Rochae Petgrave, Tornia Gordan and Robinette Osborne all turned in career bests to lead the way.

The sophomore girls went a step further with a best ever second place finish. Iasia Holland, Michelle Beckford, Shamar Stewartson, Aliesha Henry, Jessica Belgrave and Stella Ogarra all turned in career bests as well.

These girls will be joined by teammates Stephanie Mineete, Gaelle Okio, Aleisha Woodley, Joniann Phillips, Kadean Brown, Crystal David, Christina David, Letisha Howard, Naja Watts, Davina Hamilton, Jedidah Tate, and Taniqua Grant at next week's boro championships.

Coach Gliner is optimistic that the girls will have another great outing!

The team is not only striving to new heights but almost all of the girls will returns next year. With close to 50 girls, the Lady Seahorses have just 4 seniors. This run will be a long one! Great job girls!
