National Service Team Makes A Difference

A national service program has teamed up with Ocean Village Apartments and P.S. 225 to assist in tutoring, as well as aid in the development of an after-school program, and starting an activity program for the elderly in the community.

AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members are attempting to enlist local volunteers in their efforts to develop an after-school program at the Ocean Village apartment complex of 1200 units in Rockaway.

On September 15, a team of AmeriCorps NCCC members from the Northeast region campus, in Perry Point, MD, will relocate to Ocean Village for a stint of eight weeks. The team will be assisting teachers in the classrooms of P.S. 225, Seaside Elementary School, where over 400 of the Ocean Village residents’ youth attend class. Also, the team will facilitate an after-school program for the children.

Another facet of the project will be to implement a senior citizen outreach program within the Ocean Village community. This will be done in an effort to help the seniors become active within their community. The AmeriCorps NCCC members are also looking for neighborhood residents to take an active role as volunteers in both the after-school and senior programs. This will help ensure that the projects will maintain its success indefinitely.

Edward Williams, the community liaison for Congressman Gregory Meeks, who represents the sixth district of New York has said, "I think that it’s a program of some very dedicated individuals to which communities should embrace and support unequivocally…what AmeriCorps NCCC offers, is second to none!"

The National Civilian Community Corps is a part of AmeriCorps, a network of national service programs created to improve the environment, enhance education, increase public safety, and address unmet human needs. AmeriCorps NCCC members are ages 18-24, and must complete 1,700 hours of community service during their ten-month commitment. In exchange for their service, members receive $4,725 to help pay for college, or repay student loans. Citizens seeking opportunity to serve in AmeriCorps can visit AmeriCorps worldwide at www.americorps.org or call 1-800-942-2677.
