The harriers of The St Thomas More Cross Country team showed great ability in the CYO Half Mile Championships, a race that combining runners from both sections, held at Alley Spring Park on October 6th. In this last non team-scoring meet all runners covered the same half-mile distance in preparation for the Sectional Championships to be held on October 20th.
The Junior Boys look ready to compete for the Sectional Title. St Thomas More will compete in the Black Section with Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Snows, St Fidelis, St Francis De Sales and St Kevin's. Teams place by adding the place scores of their top three runners. The team with the lowest total is the champion. The Junior Boys had five runners in the top ten and three of the top five finishers led by Kevin D'Emic's 3:07 winning performance. Other Junior Stars: Robert Klein (3:13 3rd), Daniel Lee (3:14 4th), Shawn Egan (3:16 7th), Thomas McNoble (3:21 10th), TJ Petronis (3:26), Connor Hubbard (3:40), Stephen Henderson (3:51) and Joseph Drennan (4:04).
The Novice Boys finished 1st, 2nd and 4th and look ready to take on all challengers. Jack Kane defended his championship and moved into 8th place on the All Time STM Novice list running 3:35. Sean McNoble move into 9th place on the list with his 3:37 2nd place finish. Patrick Egan finished in 4th place running 3:45. Fine performances were also earned by: Ryan D'Emic (4:37), Christian Conlon (4:42), Justin Zwick (4:47), James Morgan (5:07), Edward McCarthy (5:08) and Danny Hessman (5:19).
The Emma Devlin (3:28 2nd), Kara Egan (3:38 4th), Katie Henderson (3:40 6th) and Molly Tacopina (3:42 9th) led Bantam Girls should strongly compete for a title on Sunday. They will be supported by: Alex Plaia (3:58), Erin Tacopina (4:03), Lauren Katen (4:14), Christian Hedderson (4:20) and Becky McCarthy (4:48).
Cindy Henderson led our Novice Girls with her (3:45) 3rd place finish. This is the 5th fastest time ever run by a Novice Girl for STM. She was supported by: Brianne Kelly (4:12), Briana McLoughlin (4:19), Justine Morgan (4:22), Julie Maloney (4:30), Brittany Schafer (4:35) and Kristin Corral (4:41).
Newcomer Ashley McLoughlin's (3:48) medal-winning performance led our other two Junior Girls: Heidi Zwick (4:20) and Linda Maloney (4:28). James Boyhan (3:41) and Mark Caputo (3:42) led our Bantam Boys. Strong support from Patrick Cusack (4:18), Liam Anderson (4:22) or Steven Takina (5:03) will be needed to compete in the team scoring.
STM looks to improve on last year's three Sectional Team Championships and two Individuals titles. Results will appear in next week's Wave.
