Rugby Fisheads Win In Manhattan Rain Storm
Rugby Fisheads Win
In Manhattan Rain Storm
By Bob Johnson
Rockaway Rugby took the field against the Manhattan RFC amidst a torrential rainstorm at Randalls Island last Saturday. The Fisheads came away with a huge 24-20 victory over their divisional rivals in Met NY Rugby competition. Rockaway is now 4 and 1 and plays archenemy Long Island at home in Ft.Tilden at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 19.
The Fisheads again came out the box early, with strong forward play, as scrummies John McCann, Mike Geraghty, Omar Lagos, Tim Curley, and the gargantuan Kelly brothers controlled the ball. With the gusting cross field wind a huge factor, fullback Wayno Fox was able to convert 2 penalty kicks in the first 20 minutes; giving Rockaway a 6-0 lead.
Smart back play kept the ball in the Manhattan end of the field throughout the half. The wing of McKell, Johnson, Wilder, Lynch, and Dwyer were happy to break the gain line and hold on to the ball. At the 30th minute, the fisheads finally spun it wide as Aussie Clifton turned on the wheels and got the ball down to the 5 meter line. After winning the ensuing ruck, fellow Aussie Col Mckell barrelled into the Try zone, knocking over 3 defenders in his path. Another penalty goal by wily veteran Fox, gave the Fisheads a commanding 14-0 halftime lead.
Facing the wind in the second half, Rockaway was put back on their heels, as Manhattan launched a comeback. Gaining momentum as they worked the ball into Rockaway territory, their efforts were thwarted when McKell was able to pick off an errant pass and race 80 meters for his second Try of the game. Great team defense and a smart basic game plan were enough to the Fisheads in control the rest of the way.
Rockaways is now in a tie for 2nd place in the D2 Metny Rugby league and have their biggest game in years this weekend as they take on Long Island. Please come down to the Fort and give them a look.
