Watch Your Back G-man

Watch Your Back G-man

Dear Editor;

Since I'm new to the area (a Broad Channel resident for the last 6 months), I've been reticent to make any comments about situations of any sort, but I guess now is as good a time as any to start!

Gary Toms (The G-man) is exactly what a community needs to be aware of itself, but a word to the wise. After reading his phenomenal column "Enter The Dragon," I believe that squaring off with a social misfit who would perceive any comment made publicly to him as a "Dis" is only an endangerment to Mr. Toms' well being. The potential for harm to him far outweighs the benefits bestowed upon those who would "feel him." We need him alive and in one piece, and that's what I AM talking about!!"

   I've been dying to use that phrase (feel him) correctly since it's been beaten to death as jargon in the last few months.

  With regard to his column, "CNN Just Doesn't Get It," we must understand that teens have always had their own language, so let them have it. My suggestion to CNN "suits" and anchors is don't use it, don't commercialize it, and above all, never pretend to understand it even if you do. It only encourages them to further mangle a system of communication necessary to make inclusion of the alienated a lot easier.  At this point, I would like to address a letter from a concerned Ms. Tricia Sheehan. The letter, "Praising The Dragon," indeed proves that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. The silver canisters she refers to are not amyl or butyl nitrate. They are are nitrous oxide, more commonly referred to as "laughing gas." It was/is used by dentists as an anesthesia. On the streets they are known as "whippets," and in one-gallon canisters are used as a horsepower booster in drag racing cars.

Now, while not exactly good for you, it doesn't come near the damage done by amyl/butyl-nitrate abuse, which has a direct effect on the function of the heart. It is the equivalent of constantly using nitro-glycerin tablets!!

  The reason that I say this is because the broad brush thinking of the "naive" older generation is critiqued and discarded by the youth of any generation. However, the stakes being as high as they are in this Age, we can not afford to lose their attention. So truth backed by fact is the best weapon in the war to salvage a generation left to day care and the programs associated with them. These young people are looking for something, and someone, to trust and to provide straight answers.

I would love to meet Gary sometime, but until then...I guess I'll just have to make myself known through this letter!! Thanks for your time!!

DAN MAHER
