MTA Takeover of Green Bus Proposed

MTA Takeover of Green Bus Proposed

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the agency that runs most of the city’s public buses, has expressed interest in taking over four private bus lines, including the Green Bus Line, a line that services Rockaway.

While no time frame has yet been set for a takeover, the possibility has been under discussion for a number of years, especially in light of the recent strikes by employees of several of the private lines. In addition, the Green Bus Line has been under attack by Rockaway residents for many years because of its poor service record and its buses that often belch dark, black smoke into Rockaway’s streets.

MTA chairman Peter Kalikow said that he be interested in a deal to take over the bus lines, but only if the present state and city subsidies remain in place.

"What we could give, hopefully, is better service to the riders," Kalikow told reporters.

The four bus lines that are included in the plan are Green Bus, Jamaica Bus (which also serves Rockaway), Queens Surface and Triboro Coach.
