Sanitation Nabs Rockaway Man For Dumping

Sanitation Nabs Rockaway
Man For Dumping

The Department of Sanitation's Illegal Dumping Task Force has seized and impounded a Rockaway resident's van that was used to illegally dump construction material in Rockaway.

The task force, composed of plainclothes sanitation police officers, found Gilan Fordyce of Far Rockaway dumping nearly two yards of construction debris at Beach 30 and Seagirt Boulevard on September 3. Sanitation police reportedly arrested him and seized his 1985 Chevrolet van.

Fordyce is subject to a fine between $1,500 and $20,000. In addition, he must pay the clean-up fee of about $150 a cubic yard.

"Illegal dumping is against the law," Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty told reporters. "If you do it, you will get caught."

The Sanitation Task Force targets known dumpsites throughout the city. In addition, it acts on tips from residents who are tired of people dumping in their neighborhoods.
