Half-Mile Championships

Another beautiful autumn day, perfect for running, greeted the St. Francis de Sales CYO Cross-Country team on Sunday, October 6th, as they gathered for the Half-Mile Championships in Alley Pond Park. In this meet all the runners raced the same distance - a half-mile. As with the previous meet, there was no team scoring, but medals were awarded to the first 15 runners in each race, with separate races for boys and girls, divided by age. With at least one race under their belt, the St. Francis de Sales runners approached the race with more confidence and savvy and improved their performance.

Andy Cruz, SFDS's lone senior, started things off with a fantastic 3:05 for 4th place in the half-mile senior race.

The Junior Girls, 11 and 12 year olds, were led once again by Shinann Featherston capturing the gold medal running 3:12 for first place. Alexi Girlando followed in 7th place (3:34) and Sarah Donahue, despite falling at the beginning, placed 11th in 3:38. Close behind were Zoe Piccolo, Annie Werner, Michelle Kenel and Susan Richter for another great showing for the Junior Girls.

The Junior Boys, led by Tommy Boggiano capturing 2nd place in 3:09, had Greg Pulkoski (7th, 3:15) and Jimmy O'Connor (15th, 3:21) winning medals, with Matt Cusmiani, Sean Kearney, Brian Collier, JP Weber, Ryan Hurley, Chris Forman, Timmy McGovern, Robbie Tyne, Timmy Pastina and Raymond Vann running well.

The energetic Novice Girls, ages 7 and 8, were led by Lisa Pulkoski (4th, 3:52), Deirdre Ray (7th, 4:00) and Marissa Scotto (14th, 4:15) earning medals. Catherine Murphy, Lauren Towey, Casey McDade, Katlyn Sluyk, Jacylen Gillan, Stephanie Tsamasiros, and Marlene Macron raced nicely.

The SFDS Novice Boys crowded the starting line with sixteen runners. Ryan McDade, Jack Hurley and Jimmy Buckley won medals. Patrick Goldberg, Thomas Tyne, Sean Leonard, Mike Massoni, Mark Genovese, Christopher Ray, Sean Morgan, Charlie Marquardt, Steven Leonard, Bart Featherston, Anthony Castellano, Michael Olsen and Alex Goldberg all ran solid races.

Lauren Kane and Fallon Mullen ran well for the Bantam Girls. Reversing last week's finish, Steve Pulkoski won the Bantam Boys race (1st, 3:15) with Sean Towey right behind (3rd, 3:17), followed by Kilby Featherston (6th, 3:29), Thomas Ray (9th, 3:34) and Shane Brunner (14th, 3:37) winning medals. Paul Sacks, Connor McAuley, Greg Vann, James Goldberg, Ariel Feldman, Brendan McAuley and Paul Massoni all ran well.

The race distance was shorter, calling for faster paced running, and the SFDS runners met the challenge winning 18 medals including two gold medals and one silver medal.

The cross-country races resume on Sunday, October 20th with the Sectional Championships. Running will turn from an individual effort to a team emphasis. The thirteen competing parishes will be divided into two sections, Black and Yellow.

SFDS will be in the Black section competing against Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Snows, St. Fidelis, St. Kevin's and St. Thomas More. The places of the top three finishers from each team in a race are added. The team with the lowest total is champion; the next lowest score is second, etc. Medals will also be awarded to the top 15 runners from each section in each race.
