CYO Cross Country Race

A sure sign autumn as arrived is hundreds of runners gathering in Alley Pond Park for the first of four CYO Cross Country meets. On Sunday, September 29th, a beautiful sunny day with perfect running conditions, the Developmental Meet was held. Unlike most XC races, there was no team scoring, but medals were awarded to the top 25 runners in each race. There were separate races for boys and girls, divided by age. St. Francis de Sales fielded a squad of 63 runners, a mix of seasoned veterans and nervous rookies, each willing to push themselves to their limit and experience the joy of racing.

Danny Edwards, SFDS's lone senior, started things off by cranking a 6:45, sans warm-up, for 3rd place in the 1.1-mile Senior race.

Next up were the Junior Girls, 11 and 12 year olds, led by the veteran Shinann Featherston running the .8-mile course in 5:48 for first place. Newcomer Tara Mullen ran out of real estate in her pursuit of 2nd place to capture 3rd in 5:53. Hard charging Sarah Donahue placed 9th in 6:19. Rookies Alexi Girlando, Zoe Piccolo and Anne McCaffrey earned medals along with Annie Werner and Susan Richter. Michelle Kinel, also running her first race, placed 28th, for a great showing for the Junior Girls.

The Junior Boys, led by Greg Pulkoski running 5:29 to place 6th, had Brian Collier, Sean Kearney, Matt Cusmiani, JP Weber, Ryan Hurley and Chris Forman winning medals, with Robbie Tyne, Timmy McGovern and Timmy Pastina running well.

The spirited Novice Girls, ages 7 and 8, ran their 1/2 mile race with Lisa Pulkoski, Kathleen Woods, Catherine Murphy and Charlotte Werner earning medals, followed by Marissa Scotto, Stephanie Tsamasiros, Marlene Macron, Bridget Buckley, Casey McDade and Katlyn Sluyk.

The largest race is the Novice Boys. SFDS had eighteen feisty boys elbowing for room at the starting line. Led by Patrick Kilgallen in 6th place in 3:53 and followed closely by Jack Hurley (8th, 3:55), Ryan Kilgallen (10th, 4:01), Danny Donahue, and Ryan McQuade attaining medals. Charlie Marquardt, Christopher Ray, Sean Morgan, Thomas Tyne, Michael Olsen, Eugene Boggiano, Bart Featherston, Jimmy Buckley, Anthony and Mike Castellano, Patrick Goldberg, Mike Massoni and Ciaran McGee all ran solid races.

After patiently watching their SFDS teammates race, the Bantams, ages 9 and 10, lined up for their .6 mile race. Catherine Edwards and Sarah Werner won medals, followed by Fallon Mullen and Lauren Kane. Sean Towey led the Boys' race wire to wire (1st, 4:13), followed by Steve Pulkoski (3rd, 4:14), Kilby Featherston (6th, 4:17), Shane Brunner, Ryan Biddiscombe, Thomas Ryan, and Brian Woods, all winning medals. Also running well were Paul Sacks, James Goldberg, Ariel Feldman, Paul Massoni, and Terence Munns.

It was a great first meet for SFDS, with 35 runners winning medals and two capturing first place. Thanks to Mary Beth and Laura for the scoring. Want to join the fun? Practice is held at the newly refurbished Beach Channel H.S. track on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. Check out www.stfrancisdesalesparish.org for more details.
