Dorothy M. Butler

Beloved Aunt

Dorothy M. Butler (nee Geiselmann), widow of Manning J. Butler, died on September 26, 2002.

Dorothy was born in Manhattan and moved to the Rockaways as a teenager. She spent the last 85 years of her life here. Before retiring, she worked for the Board of Water Supply as an Executive Secretary for the Chief Engineer.

She was the devoted sister of Ethel Masterson, John B. Geiselmann, Jr. and Gladys Segelken.

She is survived by her niece and nephew, Patricia Masterson and John B. Geiselmann; a grand nephew; two grand nieces and four great grand nieces and nephews.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc was held at Holy Road Cemetery in Westbury, Long Island.

Michael A. Davey
Dearly Missed

Michael A. Davey, 92, of Ocean Ridge Florida, and formerly of Belle Harbor, passed away on September 27, 2002.

Michael was employed with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 37 years.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth; son, Michael W. Davey; two daughters, Ruth Mosca and Maureen Ward; two brothers, Larry and Dr. John Davey; two sisters, Mary Jane Wacks and Ann Carluccio; nine grandchildren; and three great grand children.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at St. Charles Cemetery.

Paula M. E. Edwards
Hairdresser

Paula May Eulalee Edwards, born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, West Indies was a long time resident of the Rockaway community. She passed away on September 21, 2002.

Paula worked as a hairdresser for many years.

She is preceded in death by her father, David Jones; and sisters, Alberth (Ruby) and Iris.

She is survived by her husband, James Edwards; son, Kenroy; two grandchildren; sister, Iris; brothers-in-law, Lance, John, Enoch and Gerald; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Juanita D. Gray
Nurse

Juanita Dolly Gray, a long time resident of Rockaway, died on September 18, 2002.

Juanita was employed as a nurse for most of her life.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Gray; and three children, Harry Lee, Juliette and Kenneth.

She is survived by her daughter, Yvette; sons, Jimmy, Jeffery and Dwayne; her grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Hazel Gray; cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Rockville Cemetery in Lynbrook.

Reva Holmes
Chef

Reva Holmes, born in Williston, South Carolina resided in the Rockaway community for over 20 years. She passed away on September 9, 2002.

Reva worked as a chef for many years, and she was a member of the Bethel AME Church; the Sarah Allen Missionary Society; and the Jubilee Chorus.

She is survived by her husband, Ike; daughter, Laverne Harper; son, Izell; two sisters, Mary Williams and Gloria Ryan; three brothers, Jeff, Charles Davis and Willie Peoples; grandson, Kenya Dale C. Holmes; and a host of other family members.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at All Saints Cemetery in Great Neck.

James ‘Leo’ Murray
Loved By Many

James "Leo" Murray passed away on October 3, 2002. He was the husband of Mary Ellen (nee Crowley).

James was a retired Road Carrier of Local 707 Carolina Freight Company.

He was the father of Mary Jane, James, Kate, Patricia, Noreen, Maureen, and Cornelius, and father-in-law to Cathee, Brian Graham, Philip Hughes, and Karen. "Poppy" to Erin, Meghan, Cathryna, Shannon, Daniel, Patrick, Luke, and Seamus.

Viewing will take place at the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home on Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

A special mass will be held on Monday, October 7, 9:45 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Church.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. will be held at Holy Road Cemetery in Westbury.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, New York.

Mary M. Otis
Rockaway Beach Resident

Mary M. Otis, a long time resident of Rockaway Beach, passed away on September 29, 2002 at the age of 86.

A special memorial mass will be conducted on Friday, October 4, 10:30 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Church.

Interment under the direction of the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home (Levittown Chapel) was held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in New Rochelle.

Mary Quinn
Educator

Mary (nee Kane) Quinn, of Breezy Point, coming from Brooklyn, passed away on October 1, 2002.

Mary was a graduate of St. John’s University and taught in both Parochial and the New York City school system. In addition to her professional career, she was involved in politics and ran for the City Council. She also was a Girl Scout leader; an active member of the Garden Club; a member of the choir and Rosary Society; and a former officer in the Golden Age Club.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Archibald and Jeannette (nee Morrisey) Kane; and her husband, Thomas J. Quinn.

She is survived by her children, Jeannette Roberts, Mary Quinn Kilkeary, Thomas J. Quinn, Betty Ann Hass, and Teresa Gatto; 15 grand children; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home on Friday, October 4, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m.

A special mass will take place on Saturday, October 5, 9:45 a.m., at St. Edmunds Church in Breezy Point.

Herbert Taurins
Construction Manager

Herbert Taurins, born in Latvia, was a 52-year resident of Rockaway Beach who passed away on September 28, 2002.

Herbert was employed as a construction manager for many years.

He is preceded in death by his wife,

Ziedone Taurins.

He is survived by his daughters, Irene Taurins and Maija Zvirbulis.

Earnest G. Troutman
Machinist

Earnest G. Troutman, born in Atlanta, Georgia was a 30-year resident of Rockaway who died on August 28, 2002.

Earnest was employed as a machinist.

He is survived by his son, Alan G. Troutman; two grandchildren, Alaynan and Tyra; nephew, Tracy; sister-in-law, Stelle; brother-in-law, Henry Delions; and a host of family and friends.

Disposition under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Evergreen Crematory in Hillside, New Jersey.

Anthony Varrone
Carpenter

Anthony Varrone, of Rockaway Beach, died on October 1, 2002 at the age of 72.

Anthony spent many years employed as a carpenter.

He is preceded in death by his wife.

He is survived by his children, Debra Ann Batus, Donna Marie Pearsall, Toni Ann Mazzairsi, and Laura Marie Gilmartin.

A special memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 9:30 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Church.

Interment under the direction of the Lawrence Funeral Chapel will be held at St. Charles Cemetery.

Pearl I.S. Washington
Nurse

Pearl Irisa Simmons Washington, born in the Bronx, passed away on September 5, 2002.

Pearl was employed as a computer operator for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel, sons, Daniel, Jr., Christopher, and Cory; parents, Clarence and Alice Simmons; brothers, Kelvin and Clarence Jr., sisters, Florence and Alice; in-laws, David and Delores Washington; and other family members.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. was held at All Saints Cemetery.
