A Special Thanks To Victor

A Special Thanks To Victor

Dear Editor;

I am writing to publicly thank my physical therapist, Victor Quinones, who works at the Peninsula Rehabilitation Center. I was operated on for a bi-lateral knee replacement on March 25, 2002, and I remained in the hospital for two and a half weeks. After being discharged, I was assigned to Peninsula Rehab on April 21.

After starting my therapy, I could barely walk. I took short, chopping steps and walked like a robot. When I returned to my surgeon six weeks after the surgery for a follow-up visit, he said that I had developed adhesions on the bone (scar tissue). This resulted in my having very little range of motion. I could barely bend my knees. The surgeon said I had lots of work ahead of me and the therapy would be difficult.

When Victor took on the task of breaking the adhesions, he worked with me very aggressively three times a week. The task of strengthening my muscles incorporated various forms of exercise and weight training. I lifted weights on my ankles to strengthen the muscles around my knees. I also lifted barbells and rode a bicycle backwards to break the adhesions. At the beginning, I had a lot of difficulty because the seat had to be raised very high. Today, the seat is at its lowest point and although it's very painful, I am succeeding in turning the pedals forwards and backwards.

It took a lot of work on Victor's part and mine. I went up and down flights of stairs hundreds of times as part of the rehab. My rehab also included the use of a "pumping machine," which resembles a "Stairmaster." The machine forced my knees up and down for a better range of motion. I also worked on a treadmill.

There were so many exercises that I cannot even begin to list them in this letter. Through it all, Victor kept coaching me and encouraging me to keep trying. He is so patient, and he always has a smile on his face. There is no doubt that his positive attitude rubbed off on me, and this clearly helped me in my rehabilitation.

I am deeply grateful to Mr. Victor Quinones for the tremendous amount of time, patience and energy that he put into my rehab and recovery. He put up with my tears and complaints, but he never faltered. He worked tirelessly and was determined to help me in my recovery. He is always studying and looking for new methods to improve his trade, and he is an inspiration to many, including myself.

As I continue with my rehabilitation, I must state in the strongest terms that Peninsula Rehab Center is the best on the Rockaway peninsula. I have used other facilities, and I have made comparisons. The workers at PRC are skilled and very dedicated. Thank you Victor!
