Weiner Chides Bush On Jerusalem

President Bush has signed the State Department's authorization bill into law, but in so doing, has disclaimed a provision providing for official U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.  Rep. Anthony Weiner, who authored the provision recognizing Jerusalem, released the following statement:

"Bush's refusal to recognize Jerusalem slaps a staunch ally in the face for fear of upsetting hostile and terrorist regimes.  That turns the Bush doctrine on its head, and punishes Israel for the sins of its neighbors.

"Since 9/11, no country has stood more closely with the U.S., and under such duress, than Israel.  Recognizing its official capital, as we do with every other country in the world, is not too much to ask.

"But seeking to appease those who have done little in the war on terror, just as we are gearing up to take on Iraq, is bad foreign policy, and the wrong thing to do."

Rep. Weiner's Israeli Capital Recognition Act, which provides for official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, passed as an amendment to the State Department authorization.
