On The Beach… With Beverly Baxter
Just returned to "the rock" after a brief but wonderful trip to California! I don't know about you, but for me it's very important to get away and "disappear" for a refreshing trip to the desert. My purpose for going was to attend the Bar Mitzvah of the son of a very dear friend of mine; however, while there, I also took advantage of the peace and tranquility that I seem to always feel whenever I am on that other coast. In the desert, I can breathe so much easier; and with its mountain vistas, hot springs, and expansive views, I can take a much-needed break from the hectic pace of New York life. Perhaps it's because there is so much, and nothing but, space out there that there is nothing in one's way nor any distraction. You can simply rest and rejuvenate. I thoroughly recommend it!
***On my first day back, while I was driving home from my office, I had some kind of allergic reaction to something; and since I was driving on the Belt Parkway at about 60 mph, it was terribly frightening! In fact, I was in a state of sheer panic! I felt my hands, face, and throat swell, and it was extremely hard to breathe. I made it to the Rockaway exit and prayed through Howard Beach that I would make it home. Although I made it to Broad Channel, I didn't think I could make it to Rockaway. I saw a cop who had pulled over a car that was speeding; and before he could write the ticket, I got his attention! I told him I didn't want an ambulance; but rather that I just needed to get to my Doctor right away. I just want to say thank you to the officer who was so kind enough to personally drive me, and thank you as well to Dr. Matthew Guy for seeing and treating me immediately. I'm sure that speeding driver was grateful too!
***It was nice to see Bernie Heeran the other night while dining at The Harbor Light. Although I was out of town on September 11, he, along with so many other locals who lost loved ones in the attack, were in my prayers. I am so very fond of Bernie. He always generously rises to every occasion and he has such strong convictions and integrity. Join The Harbor Light family for Sunday Brunch each week. And while there, join Patrick for a drink at the bar! I, personally, can't wait 'til the weather gets cooler and Bernie makes his famous split pea soup!
***Mary and Jim Kelly have gone on a month long holiday to Europe where they will visit Scotland, England, France, and of course, Ireland! They will attend a cousin's reunion of the Tully, Smith, Dougherty, and Kelly clans where they will each meet each other's family for the first time since their nuptials last June. I'm sure Mary will have wonderful stories to report upon her return!
***The first general membership meeting of the James Conway Sullivan Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee will take place on Monday September 23 at 8p.m. All members are urged to attend.
***My good friend Dr. Geraldine Chapey is always involved in worthwhile issues. She never ceases to amaze me with her interests, commitment, and determination! On October 6th at 2 p.m. there will be a rally at the Knights of Columbus to support Peace in Israel. The keynote speaker will be a member of the Council of Israel. Dr. Chapey states that it is "imperative that our multi-cultural community ban together to show support for Peace in the Middle East. Since Israel is our main ally and the only Democracy in the region, it is of vital importance that we demonstrate our support." For more information, please contact either Dr. Chapey or Jack King.
***Very special Happy Birthday wishes to two very special people: Mary Alice Lane and Michael Reilly who both share the same September 24 birthday. Slainte!
See you...On the Beach!
