$5 Million Available To Emergency Services

Governor George E. Pataki has recently announced that more than 1,800 eligible fire and emergency organizations will be receiving their application packages in the mail for the newly created $5 million emergency services grant program. The Governor first announced the program at the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Convention in Cheektowaga, which was held on August 22.

"This important grant program is now up and running and I encourage all eligible fire and emergency agencies to apply," said Governor Pataki. "We recognize that state-of-the-art firefighting and life saving equipment can be very expensive, and we’re committed to helping New York’s emergency services personnel in meeting these costs."

The grants will allow fire and emergency service agencies to apply for funding for reimbursement for personal protective equipment, communication equipment and fire accessories such as thermal imaging cameras. Applicants may apply in any or all of the three categories, up to a maximum of $50,000 for the total.

In order for grant requests to be considered, applicants must be in compliance with New York State Fire Reporting requirements. Preference will be given to applications that demonstrate the greatest need and those that will be applied toward attaining compliance with federal and state laws.

At least 50 percent of the funds must be to applicants whose fire protection or ambulance service members are exclusively volunteers and whose fire department or ambulance service budget for the previous year is no more than $100,000.

Secretary of State Randy A. Daniels, whose Department oversees the Office of Fire Prevention and Control, said, "The Department of State is committed to ensuring an expeditious review of applications so that grants may be awarded as soon as possible. Governor Pataki has provided a tremendous opportunity for our fire and ambulance departments to purchase necessary equipment and we are looking forward to receiving their applications and awarding grants."

Applications will be reviewed at the next meeting of the Emergency Services Grant Program Advisory Board in October and awards will be made shortly thereafter. To obtain an application package, please call (518) 474-6746 or fax (518) 474-3240. Written requests on official letterhead may be sent to the NYS Department of State, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, ATTN: Emergency Services Grant Fund, Albany, NY 12231. The application package is also available on the Department of State website at www.dos.state.ny.us.
