No Fan of The Green Book

No Fan of The Green Book

Due to the rash of tickets issued to innocent citizens whose only crime is using the beach as recreation, perhaps the Parks Department should rename this "famous" green book the red book after the famous policies of dictator Chairman Mao of China. Whether a red or green book, they violate the basic democracies of our society. Thousands of people come to the Rockaways to use its beaches, which have, in my opinion the best in the eastern seaboard.

This policy of ticketing people for surfing or leaving your beach towel unattended will only drive people away to Nassau and Suffolk county beaches. As a surfer, the post Labor Day period is the most important time to surf off these waters.

Please note that I purchased my surfboard and learned to surf in the Rockaways. However, the risk of getting a ticket and having my surfboard confiscated is simply not worth the risk! I may have to go to the Jersey shore or Long Island this season. Congratulations to the famous green book for a job well done!

I hope someday that the Chamber of Commerce, local politicians, and especially the Parks Department conduct a study to see how recreational use of Rockaway’s beautiful shoreline is, and can continue to be, if not better to your local economy.
