World War II Veteran
Leonard Berger passed away on August 24, 2002 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Known to his family and friends as "Lenny", he grew up in Rockaway on Beach 80 Street, moved to Far Rockaway, and later retired to Daytona Beach. He was a veteran of World War II, receiving the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Lenny worked for Metropolitan Tobacco for over forty years.
He is survived by his wife Anna (Casalino); son, Dicky; daughter-in-law, Sharon' four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor and Ruth.
Theresa M. Bertuccio
Checker - A&P
Theresa M. Bertuccio, a life long resident of Rockaway Beach, passed away on August 29, 2002.
Theresa worshipped at St. Rose of Lima and was employed as a checker at the old A&P that used to operate in Rockaway Beach. Many knew her as "Nan."
She is survived by her daughters, Theresa Collins and Josephine McGarry; sisters, Stella Cocchi, Mary Landi and Kate Pecharsky; brother-in-law, Izzy Pecharsky; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc was held at St. John's Cemetery.
Ethel M. Dill
Loved By Many
Ethel M. Dill, a long time resident of the Rockaway community, died on August 8, 2002.
Ethel was employed with Varsity Transit for 30 years until her health began to decline. She retired from her position in December of 2000.
She is preceded in death by her husband John H. Dill.
She is survived by her children, Karen Porter, Jonathan Dill and Diane Mitchell; and six grandchildren.
Interment under the direction of J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home was held at Calverton National Cemetery.
Claire Hanning, a life long resident of Broad Channel, passed away on August 18, 2002 at the age of 65.
Claire worshipped at St. Virgilius Roman Catholic Church and retired after 30 years as a securities trader for Furman Selz. She was a long time member of the Broad Channel Athletic Club.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Hanning, Sr.; son, James Hanning, Jr.; sister, Mary Lou Mehrmann; and parents, William and Helen Williamson.
She is survived by her children, Helen, John and Patrick Hanning; brother, Billy Williamson; grandchildren, John Jr., Patrick Jr., Nicholas, Jennifer and Dina; and many nieces and nephews.
Interment under the direction of Hillebrand Funeral Home was held at Calvary Cemetery.
Albert 'Skip' Johnson
Albert "Skip" Johnson, a long time resident of Rockaway, died on August 27, 2002 after a long illness. He was 44.
Albert was employed with Shore Car Service and was very will known throughout the community.
He is survived by his wife Tina Quinn-Johnson of Tiberio Restaurant; daughter, Kayla Johnson; brothers, Artie Johnson and Jimmy Johnson; sisters, Pat Miley and Donna Johnson.
A special memorial service will be shared with Albert's brother, Dennis, (who passed away recently) at St. Camillus Church on August 31 at 10 a.m.
Patricia A. Kelly
Belle Harbor Resident
Patricia A. Kelly, a life long resident of Belle Harbor, passed away on August 17, 2002 at the age of 72.
She is survived by her children, Mary Ellen Piccoli, Carol Ann Duffy, Kathleen Thompson, James William Kelly, Kevin Patrick Kelly and Patricia Carchietta; close relatives, Frank Piccoli, Robert Thompson, Mike Duffy, James Carchietta, Susan Kelly and Kimberly D. Rose; grandchildren, Lisa and Daniel Piccoli, Jennifer Thompson, Diana and Michael Duffy, Suzanne, Christine, Douglas and James Kelly, Anthony, James and Nicholas Carchietta; great-grandchildren, Lauren Rose and Devon Kelly, and Lindzie Sardinas; and sister, Peggy Droesch.
Interment under the direction of Moloneys' Hauppauge Funeral Home, Inc. was held at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
Lucy Leone, born in Brooklyn, was a 30-year resident of the Rockaway area before relocating to Mastic Beach. She died on August 25, 2002.
Lucy worshipped at St. Jude's Church.
She is survived by her son, Reverend James M. Leone; daughter, Mary Ann Marcoux; sisters, Victoria Palmeri and Amelia Scarlatti; six grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Holy Sepulchre.
William G. McKenna
William G. McKenna, born in Far Rockaway, passed away on August 23, 2002.
William worshipped at St. Mary Star of the Sea and was a retired teacher with the New York City Board of Education. His father, Nicholas, was the son of Arverne pioneers.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas McKenna and Alice (nee Callahan) McKenna; and sister, Sr. Patricia McKenna CSJ.
He is survived by his brother, Johon J. McKenna; and many nieces and nephews.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at St. Charles Cemetery.
Daytop Village Administrator
Leeann Musgrove, born in Oceanside, New York, died on August 24, 2002.
Leeann worshipped at St. Rose of Lima and worked as an Executive Administrator for Daytop Village.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth R. Musgrove; parents, Edwin and Carol (nee D'Anna) Ghigliotty; and daughter, Christina Best.

Clare J. O'Brien
Golden Age Club Member
Clare J. O'Brien, a long time resident of Rockaway, passed away on August 26, 2002.
Clare was a former President of the Golden Age Club of St. Camillus Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. O'Brien.
She is survived by her children, Patricia Clancy, Thomas, Mary Brown, Daniel, Gregory and Michael; siblings, Thomas Kinneary, Margaret Sieger, and Joseph and Frank Kinneary; ten grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral mass will be held Friday, August 30, 10 a.m., at St. Camillus Church.
Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. will be held at Long Island National Cemetery.
