The Nassau County Medical Examiner has corroborated the fact that the body of a Black male clad only in shorts found floating off Atlantic Beach in Nassau County on Sunday, August 18 was the remains of a drowning victim who was pulled under the waves at Beach 19 Street, at the western end of the East Rockaway Inlet on August 10.
"We have a positive identification on the body and it is indeed Harold Dickerson," The Nassau County medical examiner told The Wave on Wednesday.
Dickerson, a resident of St. Albans, was pulled under by a rip current after saving a relative, who was a weak swimmer, from the surf. The accident occurred at 6:45 p.m., 45 minutes after the lifeguards went off duty for the day.
Dickerson's body was discovered by an unidentified boater about a mile southeast of the East Rockaway Inlet at about 8:45 in the morning, eight days after he was last seen in Rockaway waters.
