Music Fest 2002: A Tribute
By Gary G. Toms
On August 25, thousands from the Rockaway peninsula attended Music Fest 2002, an annual concert that showcased Caribbean and Latin music. This year's concert was dedicated to the memory of the late NY State Assemblywoman Pauline Rhodd-Cummings, who succumbed to cancer in January of this year.
Many great talents graced the stage, including the legendary "Mighty Sparrow." Much to the delight of his fans, The Mighty Sparrow sang some of his classic hits, as the crowd joined in. The event also featured West Indian food, a fruit market and clowns who painted the faces of children and made balloon animals.
The Rockaway Promoters, the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation, the Deerfield Area Association, and JP Morgan Chase were instrumental in bringing in talent and organizing the event.
