Rockaway’s Annual Lifeguard Olympics
By Maureen E. Ritter
A large enthusiastic crown turned out last Wednesday evening when New York City lifeguards, representing each of Rockaway’s lifeguard shacks, participated in the Annual Lifeguard Olympics held at Beach 106 Street.
The lifeguards, stationed throughout the peninsula, competed against each other alone and in teams. The tournament is comprised of events that test for speed, strength, stamina and skill needed in lifeguard work. Some of the events hat the lifeguards compete in: a 5 bay Ocean Swim, Run-Swim-Run, Paddleboard (paddling a surf-rescue board), Rescue Reels (a "victim" swims out into the ocean, a lifeguard swims out with bouy to "rescue the victim and the rest of his/her team reels in the attached line, pulling both of them in to shore), Bouy Rescue (individual lifeguards swim out with buoys to "rescue" victims and bring them back into shore) Flags (lifeguards start this competition lying face down in the sand and must jump and race to retrieve flags)
The spirited competition proved that Rockaway lifeguards are superb athletes. With 86 Street Lifeguard Shack winning overall, some event winners were:
