The Waldheim Softball Report
By Corinne Anne Waldheim
Can it get any hotter out there? This summer's temperatures are setting a historical precedence. Speaking of setting precedence, the Cardinals are competing in the playoffs for the first time since the team's inception several years ago. To get there, they overcame an obstacle in the form of the Mudsharks.
The first game was won 11-2. For the Mudsharks, Chris McCarthy hit a homer, the first of two on the day. Joey Ernst had a few hits. Leo Chavanne Sr. helped coach his men to victory with support from son's Brian and Leo Jr. Steven James and Kevin Harnischer hit the ball hard. Everyone seemed to contribute in one way or another. Chris James made a great catch in right field in game two. I would have more stats but I lost my notes, a journalist cardinal sin.
Over in Broad Channel, the Grassy Point Muggers dropped two to the Rockies, setting up a championship match up of the Rockies vs. the Cardinals next Sunday in Broad Channel at 10am. "Bill Smith is a softball God," said Charlie Kinzie.
In women's softball news, O's will take on Grassy's at 6pm Saturday evening at the Legion Field. Last time these two teams met up, O's defeated Grassy Point 15-14 with the help Deanna Glade who we hope will play for O's again this year. Rumor has it Margaret won't let her!
It should be quite a game as fans wait breathlessly to see if Janet O'Hare will attempt to maim designated pitcher Kenny Grey again this year.
I also want to wish my mom and dad a happy belated 29th wedding anniversary. Be sure to check out next week's article when hopefully I won't misplace my notes!
A message to my fellow Beach Channel alumni class of 1993: Our ten-year reunion is scheduled for June of 2003. For updates and additional info please email BCHSReunion1993@aol.com or check out the reunion center on Classmates.com.
