NY Sharks Are National
The New York Sharks Women's Professional Tackle Football Team, currently home to 50 women football players from the tri-state area, just topped off a 9 game undefeated season with the National Crown.
On July 6th, 2002, Ashland, Oregon hosted the first Independent Women's Football League Championship. The Sharks with an 8-0 record along with most points scored during the season (372) and the least points scored against (18), were victorious with a 24-4 win over Austin, Texas Outlaws.
Known as one of the toughest and most talented teams in the country, the Sharks were the team most widely covered by the media in 2000-2001, appearing on national talk shows including ABC's "The View with Barbara Walters" and "Live with Regis." The Sharks were featured in Sports Illustrated for Women, The New York Times, The Washington Post and many other newspapers and magazines. The team has been promoted numerous times on local New York City TV news and radio shows and has even signed an option agreement for a television series. Because of our many accomplishments, our team is becoming known all over the country.
From November of 2001 through February of 2002, nearly 100 women competed for 50 spots on the team by participating in tryouts and a rigorous, two-day mini camp, which was held February 9th and 10th. The players are top female athletes from rugby, flag football, and soccer as well as other sports.
Player diversity is very broad, with participating athletes from many ethnicity's, ranging in age from 18-46, some single, while others are married with children. All athletes retain full-time jobs off the field. Examples of off-field occupations include attorneys, bankers, business executives, computer programmers, teachers, students, personal trainers, and accountants, just to name a few. The first year (2000), the team posted a winning 7-2 season and last year, produced a 6-1 record before the season was cut short by the 9/11 tragedy. The Shark's owner Andra Douglas is a former Vice President at Time Warner and is a creative consultant for the entertainment industry. Twice Douglas has played on national champion rugby and flag football teams and was a semi-pro golfer. Douglas is also one of the Sharks' quarterbacks. In the last few years, Douglas has played a key role in helping to establish women's professional football.
The New York City Sports Commission has recently recognized The Sharks as an official Pro team of NYC along with the Mets, Giants, Jets, Yankees, Power, Liberty, etc. and will be promoting us for now and next season. Helen Marshal, the Queens Borough President met with us last week and she is backing us in the upcoming season as well.
