Brooklyn Cyclones Update:
Stretch Run Arrives
By Elio Velez

The dog days of August bring unbearable weather and the dog days have arrived at Cyclones pitcher Miguel Pinango. 0-5 this season for Brooklyn, Pinango continued his losing ways with terrible outings last week against Hudson Valley and Jamestown.

In Pinango's last 2 outings, which were losses, he has given up 12 runs on 14hits in 10 innings. Though he is second on the team in strikeouts, Pinango loses his control when runners get on base. He is now 0-5 in the season with a 3.64 E.R.A.

For the last two weeks, the Cyclones have been road travelers as they played 14 of 17 games on the road. After an exciting 12-6 win in 11 innings in Jamestown on August 10, the 8-hour bus ride did not help the weary young Cyclones as they returned for a one game homestand against Hudson Valley. Manager Howard Johnson talked about the bus ride, "I expect the guys to be tired after the long bus rides but we will not take anything for granted and we're going to hit and be fine. We just have to handle these long bus rides."

The Cyclones lost against Hudson Valley but bounced back after another 5 hour-long bus ride to beat Aberdeen the next night 6-4 in 11 innings.

DH Bobby Malek was placed on the disabled list with a bad right shoulder that had plagued him all season. The Michigan State grad was limited to DH duties but a .207 average and continuing weakness in the shoulder led to his stint in the DL. Malek will not return this season but remains with the ballclub as a part-time first base coach.

N.Y. Mets' 2002 first round pick Scott Kazmir was given the all clear and started last week. The 18-year old Austin, Texas native threw off the mound before the Cyclones-HV game in Brooklyn in a 15-minute stint.

Brooklyn comes back home on August 17 for one day. But as Ernie Banks once said, "Let's play two"!! The Cyclones will play a split day-night doubleheader. The first game will start at 12 p.m. and the next game will start at 7 p.m. The first game's promotion will be Honeymooners Day based on the Jackie Gleason classic TV show.
