The Boys of Summer

Reside In Rockaway

In early March of this year, five boys who reside on the Rockaway peninsula (Thomas Tsatsis, James McCool, Brian King, John Duggan, and Mike Carnacchio) traveled to a Brooklyn gym to begin practice with the St. Columba baseball nine year old team. Between April and July, the Columba team would compete in 30 games against various 9-10 year old teams throughout Brooklyn. In addition, the Rockaway 5 even managed to play in their local community at the Rockaway Little League.

With great dedication and giving up many beautiful days at the beach, these kids from Rockaway and the other great players from the St Columba team, have proven to be true winners. This past week, the Columba Bombers captured the NY State Cal Ripken - Babe Ruth Metro Championship, hosted at St. A’s field in Brooklyn. The team outlasted other 9-year-old All Star teams from Nassau County, Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn. The Rockaway 5 made contributions throughout, especially in the Championship Game, winning 7-6 against the very skilled All- Star team from Brooklyn North.

The team will now travel to Lindenwold, NJ representing the NY Metropolitan area to compete in the Babe Ruth Middle Atlantic Region Invitational. The St Columba team will face All Star teams from Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and NJ. We wish the team good luck and congratulate them on a great achievement.
