This Is Still A Democracy

This Is Still A Democracy

The discussions in the last few issues of The Wave on the subject of
deletion of "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance were vigorous and democratic.

It is sad, though, that your sound editorial position in favor of the Ninth Circuit Court ruling (to delete the two words) offended and even alienated some readers. That is especially unfortunate and ironic because the Court decision was welcomed as a return of the pledge to its original
inclusiveness. The insertion of "under God" in 1954 had had the unacknowledged but widely recognized purpose of notifying atheists, agnostics, and worshippers of different deities that they were not truly American.

There has appeared to be broad support across the country, among religious and non-religious alike, for deletion of "under God", the better to ensure freedom of belief for all.
