A 76-year-old woman who was swimming far from the shore on Monday night, August 5, got into trouble in the deep water and had to be rescued and taken to the hospital by EMS, according to official reports.

The woman, who remains unidentified at press time, was reportedly swimming at about 6:45 on Monday evening, 45 minute after the lifeguards went off duty.

According to one eyewitness, the woman "was way out there" off the beach at Beach 104 Street when she began calling for help.

Several onlookers called 911 and units of the 100 Precinct, as well as units from the NYPD’s harbor and aviation unit responded.

Although news reports on Tuesday said that a surfer, who asked not to be identified for fear of getting a summons for surfing, rescued the woman, onlookers told The Wave that two NYPD SCUBA divers operating from Harbor Adam pulled the woman out of the water.

An EMS spokesperson told The Wave on Wednesday that the woman was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Far Rockaway, but the hospital could find no record of her admission to that facility.
