Communities Remember 9/11

Communities Remember 9/11

A community-wide gathering to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the events of September 11 will take place at the St. Francis de Sales athletic field in Belle Harbor on Tuesday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. The ceremony will be preceded by a candlelight march from the firehouse on Beach 116 Street (near Rockaway Beach Boulevard) at 6:50 p.m. The procession will make its way down Newport Avenue to St. Francis, where the memorial will be held. In case of rain, the service will be moved to St. Francis’ auditorium.

The event is being planned by faith communities in the Rockaway/Five Towns area under the sponsorship of the Rockaway-Five Towns Interfaith Clergy Council. Speakers from local faith, fire and police communities will participate: including Monsignor Martin Geraghty, Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum, Dr. Benjamin Patterson, Sister Ruth Lautt and Reverends Paul Rahilly and Jan Powell. Live music and the dedication of a remembrance tree will be part of the service.

For more information you can contact Reverend Powell at the First Congregational Church, 320 Beach 94 Street in Rockaway Beach, or Reverend Elizabeth Aurand at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, 411 Bayview Avenue in Cedarhurst.
