It’s a girl! Elizabeth Ann Matuozzi was born to my daughter-in-law, Julie and my son Kevin Matuozzi in San Diego on August 4, 2002 weighing in at 7 pounds, 7ounces. Mother and baby are doing well after a difficult birth. Dad and older sister Samantha are thrilled with the new pretty little girl as well as Grandma and the entire family. Elizabeth Ann, daughter of Tom Connors and Helen Hart will celebrate her birthday on August 25. Congratulations!

Received a letter from Sally Schaberick, who has had Mulitple Sclerosis for over thirty years and, understandably, was quite disturbed at the fact that in last week’s column regarding the fund raising event that was on the Intrepid for MS. in parenthesis, (Muscular Dystrophy) appeared which is an entirely different medical problem usually diagnosed in childhood. MS, on the other hand, develops in the 25 to 35 age group and is life debilitating. I do apologize for my error, possibly due to extra pressure, and I am happy Sally called my attention to it. Fortunately for Sally, she is able to work every day, but heartbreakingly knows her condition will never improve, only worsen. She brought out the fact that there are no care centers for those afflicted with MS in the Rockaways.

Though there are many care centers in Manhattan and one in Queens they are only day centers except for NYC. Outlying areas have no evening care centers for the people with MS who work during the day. Also, her insurance (Blue Cross) does not cover medical bills incurred for the treatment for this disease nor are her prescription drugs. This problem must be addressed and, if at all possible, changed. There are two people who come to mind who might help Sally: Liz Sulik, President of Rockaway Chamber of Commerce, who can move mountains, if she chooses and Geraldine Chapey, who is most effective in establishing programs for those in great need. For starters, I suggest Sally contact them and, if they cannot help, will certainly steer Sally in the right direction. Perhaps some of my readers have other suggestions. Please let me hear from you. If those of you with MS in the Rockaways want an evening care center please send in your names, addresses and phone numbers to the Chamber of Commerce or me. That might be helpful. Hope we can help you Sally.

The Muscular Dystrophy fundraiser was held at Bridgewaters at the South Street Seaport with New York’s best chefs’ tastings and a silent and live auction. Both events were lavish and great fun galas and for good worthy causes.

Was that a bolt out of the blue? Or, was it part of the performance during Pajama Game at the Rockaway LIVE Theatre this past Friday night during the thunderstorm. Members of the audience thought it was part of the performance until they found out the lighting and sound Director, son of Stage Manager, Peggie Page’s was struck by lightening. We know he had charge of lighting and sound, but he didn’t have to go that far. Thankfully, he is doing fine with only a minor bruise. God must have been with him. It could easily have been a tragedy. Be careful in these storms. They are so dangerous especially beach areas as well as on golf courses.

BPSC Bocce…Claire Hughes and Charlie Cassata were winners in Guys and Dolls. In Ladies Dbls, Shirley Hanrahan and Betty Morgan took over Kathy Higgins and Mary Pat Conry. Ellen and Lenny Wunder had a great time at Ellen’s grandson’s reception, July 25 when he, James Donovan Lysaght was formerly admitted to the Bar.

Dottie Dunne of Golf fame and 221 St (no relation) is so proud of her daughter Maureen who just became First Grade Detective in the Homocide Division stationed at the 60 precinct in Brooklyn. Congratulations, Maureen. Another brave one from Breezy.

Went aboard the Carnival Triumph for a travel agent lunch and really got a good look at this huge ship. What I like best about the Triumph is that all the lounges are on one deck, If you get tired of dancing to old tunes, go next door for rock and roll or Disco all night long. They have everything for you and when they said these are the fun ships they said the right thing. They certainly are. Carnival Triumph is running 2 and 3 nt. cruises to nowhere for as little as $299p.p. If you have never been on a cruise before this is great way get a taste of cruising at an affordable price.
