Camp The Place To Be
If you thought that the neighborhood beaches seemed a little less crowded during the week of July 22nd you were correct! The place to be was attending St. Francis De Sales' Girls Basketball Camp. And that's just where over 40 dedicated, talented, young female basketball players were. The camp, in its 4th year, continues to operate under its original premise: to afford grammar school-aged players the opportunity to improve their basketball skills and enhance their ability while allowing young adults the opportunity to "give back" to their community. The Camp coaching staff is comprised of community-driven young adults.
Camp Director Mrs. Maureen Gigliello, (Stella Maris High School Varsity Coach) and Program Director Mrs. Jean Sporrer (NYS Girls Board of Officials) were ably assisted in the camp by coaches Maggie Allen, Brian Kelly, Kenny Kelly, John McGovern, Brian McKeon, Greg McKeon and Brian Raphael.
The Camp is divided into 2 leagues: the NCAA (younger) and the WNBA. Each day, both groups compete in 2 games, station work, various relay races and contests (foul shooting for example). Station work, for the NCAA, involves teaching lay-ups and dribbling to some first-timers to introducing the crossover and spin move to others. In the WNBA, players are asked to fine-tune their basic skills, add more creative offensive moves (ex. drop step and behind the back pass), and increase their general knowledge of the game and their court awareness. Inevitably, by week's end each person (campers and staff) has learned something new and enjoyed her/himself.
The entire staff would like to thank all the campers for working so hard and the many parents who came out each day to watch the events and the "Stuff the Staff'.
One Camp ends and another begins anew. This past Monday, July 29th, the SFDS Boys Basketball Camp took the courts. With Mr. Jim McKeon (SFDS Parish Athletic Representative) at the helm, some changes to the coaching staff and over 50 dedicated, talented, young boys on hand the action continued at St. Francis De Sales.
Camp chatter: Thanks to BMc, the cones are safe once again. Scoobie, we hardly knew ya! JMc and Mrs.S: was that wind or sunburn? KK and GMc: any more goodies to hand out? BK: what, we didn't rate a nice buzz cut? BR, the dunk will come! Mrs. G how many boo-boo time-outs make up a camp? And MA, the pool? The invite?
