On Saturday, August 10 at 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. at Riis Landing, across the road from Fort Tilden, Rockaway Artists Alliance presents an artist's reception for Peter Lundberg's new monumental sculpture, "Looking to Sea." All are welcome. Live music, refreshments. Meet the artist.

To celebrate the monarch butterfly migration, "All A-Flutter," an exhibition of stunning color photographs of butterflies in their natural habitat, comes to sTudio 6 Gallery from August 24 through September 22. The opening reception is Sunday, August 25, 1-3 p.m. The work of RAA nature photographers Holly Gordon, Laura M. Eppig and Kathleen Hervey will be displayed. More about this terrific show in coming weeks.

OPEN CALL TO ARTISTS - RAA ARTSPLASH 2002: The Rockaway Artists Alliance is hosting its third annual multi-media arts event from October 5 - November 3 at Fort Tilden, in partnership with Gateway National Recreation Area. Visual artists of all media, literary and performing artists are invited to participate. This is a juried show. Sculpture, photography, fine arts, dance, video, poetry, ceramics, music, theater and performance will all be considered for this extravaganza. RAA's sTudio 6, sTudio 7, outdoor stage, sculpture garden and the surrounding park will be utilized. Performing artist participants will form the framework of special events, both indoor and outdoor. Two awards of $250 each will be presented for excellence. The award winners will be chosen from all selected participants. Thursday, August 8 from 6-8 p.m. in sTudio 6 Gallery, Fort Tilden, GNRA: Free seminar by Queens Council on the Arts (QCA) to help individual artist applicants fill out applications for 2003 Queens Community Arts Fund grants. This is a regrants program of QCA that provides support towards cultural activities in this borough. Application deadline is September 19, 2003. New applicants are required to attend one of the seminars being offered throughout the borough. For more information log onto www.queenscouncilarts.org or call QCA at 718 647-3377.

Friday, August 9 6:30-8:30 p.m.: Exhibition opening at Pottery by Susan Crafts Shop. Location: The Wave Building, 88-08 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Featuring works of Jamaican artist Angella Brown, Susan Locke, Norma Allende and others.

"The Art of Renewal": Art by the residents of the Project Renewal Third Street Shelter, is an exhibition being held through August 15 at the Cooper Union Great Hall Gallery located at 7th Street and Third Avenue. Gallery hours: Mon-Thurs 11 AM-6 PM. Geoff Rawling is an instructor at the Project Renewal Shelter.

Contact West End Temple if you are interested in entering your artwork in an auction at the temple to take place Sunday, August 18 at 7 p.m. Call the temple for details.

August 1-9, seven members of RAA and 14 Sculptors will exhibit sculpture at the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. The sculptures will be placed around the plaza near the parking lot. Esther Grillo will exhibit the kinetic sculpture "Psychedelic Mushroom."

The RAA general meeting on Monday, August 12 at 7:30 p.m. in building T-149 is your last chance to submit images to be included in the 2003 RAA calendar. The calendar will include four images selected by the Calendar Committee and will be printed in September.
