Stella Maris Concludes
Successful B-Ball Camp
The Lady Flipper Basketball Camp, hosted by Stella Maris High School, concluded its weeklong instruction on Friday, July 12th. The Camp, in its 5th successful year, has grown in leaps and bounds. This year, seventy-five dedicated players were in attendance. The young ladies ranged in age from 7 thru 14.
To accommodate the surge in enrollment, a second outdoor court was added. So, if you were one of the boardwalk pedestrians who stopped to watch the enthusiastic, high level of play during the week of July 8th, you had a glimpse of just what the Camp Staff was so highly impressed by all week.
Campers are asked to bring a sense of humor, an eagerness to learn and as much energy as possible. And they always deliver! Once again, the coaching Staff was bowled over by the work ethic, skill level and "coachability" of all the players. Sport-specific skills covered shooting, ball handling, moving without the ball, defense and post play were either introduced (to our younger players) or expanded upon for our "old ladies".
One of the week’s highlights is "defense" day when Queens College Women’s Head Coach, Mr. Jerry Ingenito, delivers his interactive instruction on man-to man principles. Each year, it proves not only educational for the campers but for the Staff as well.
And finally, with five Stella Maris Alum on the coaching staff and twelve of the counselors soon to be SM graduates, we already had plenty of memories and stories to swap. However, "homecoming" week was extended when more than 25 Alumnae daughters, nieces and or granddaughters attended this year’s Camp.
