FDNY Firefighters Raise
By Elio Velez
In an article last week, NYC firefighter and Rockaway resident Tom McCann traveled to Lake Tahoe to raise money for the Uniformed Firefighters Association Scholarship Fund. Along with Kevin O'Brien of Staten Island and Guy Warren from Lake Success, they went to play golf alongside sports celebrities such as Micheal Jordan, Emmitt Smith and others. It turned out to be a fun and successful trip.
The fund is $135,993 richer following a tally of donations at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, which ended last Sunday. The three firefighters combined to win $7,506 in prize money after three days of competition. The fund supports the educational pursuits of the families of New York City firefighters both living and deceased.
American Century, which sponsored the tournament, donated $10,00 after Guy Warren missed a $1 million putt. Live and silent auctions of items donated by tournament competitors raised money as well.
Guy Warren finished the best of the firefighters with a total of 241, 25 over par and finished 35th place out of the 75-man field. Tom McCann finished at 256, 40 over par and finished 52nd place. Kevin O'Brien scored a 270, 54 over par and finished in 60th place.
