Now Named Ocean Bay Apts.

Dear Editor;

This is a letter sent to the District Manager of Queens Community Board #14, Mr. Jonathan Gaska.

Re: New York City Housing Authority's Arverne and Edgemere Houses Has A New Name -- Ocean Bay Apartments.

The New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA's) Department of Housing Finance and Development (HUD), with the support of both Residents Councils was granted approval from NYCHA's Board to officially change the name of Arverne Houses ("Arverne") and Edgemere Houses ("Edgemere") to Ocean Bay Apartments. This name change will be consistent with HOPE VI philosophy that is being utilized across the country, which is to change "public housing namesakes" to be more mainstream, thus making public housing less distinguishable from the greater community.

NYCHA is currently renovating the apartment interiors at Ocean Bay Apartments. Every apartment in each development will eventually have new amenities. A model apartment will be available to view. In addition, renovation work will soon start on all of the buildings' lobbies and facades providing greater security and a more modern, updated look.

In honor of all of these changes, NYCHA is planning an Ocean Bay Day celebration for Fall 2002. You will be kept informed of the date, the time, and the festivities planned.

Enclosed you will find a brief synopsis of the history and overall plan for the revitalization plan at Ocean Bay Apartments. If you have any questions, you may contact me at (212) 306-4417.
