Chapey Clubs Lead County In Petitions

As everyone knows - it's petition time again. Each year, during the month of June, candidates who are running in New York State need to circulate petitions to be on the ballot.

There is one exception for those who are running statewide.  If they are the designees of the State Convention they do not need to circulate petitions. In the 23rd Assembly District our male and female democratic state committee people are Joseph Addabbo and Patricia O'Connor. They represented us at the New York State Democratic Convention, which took place in Manhattan last month.

In the 2002 elections we will have the opportunity to vote for our members of the New York State Senate - Malcolm Smith, the New York State Assembly - Audrey Pheffer, and our representative to the Congressional House of Representative - Anthony Weiner.

During the petition process we have a wonderful opportunity to sign a petition and thereby allow a person’s name to appear on the ballot. Your signature on the petition gives the person the right to run for office. It does not mean that you must vote for that person. It's a real example of our
representative democracy.

This year, the members of the Regular Democratic Club of the Rockaways and of the South Side Democratic Club in Ozone Park did an outstanding job in collecting signatures.  We submitted 2544 signatures - more than any other club in the county. We submitted the highest number of signatures. Thanks go to the people who signed the petitions, the petition carriers and the outstanding members of our clubs for their promotion of the democratic process. Thanks goes to Sharon Gabriel, the President of our Regular Democratic Club of the Rockaways and Connie Grabowski, the President of our South Side Democratic Club in Ozone Park. They are outstanding leaders who work tirelessly for our community. Sharon and Connie are creative, intelligent and productive. Sharon brings to all her endeavors extensive credentials and vast experience in the arts and entertainment profession.

Conversations with Sharon are interesting because of her large network of friends who are the leaders in the classical and popular entertainment fields. She brings an insiders view of this exciting professional world.  Sharon is very active in many community activities including the Rockaway Music and Arts Council and the Rockaway Museum. She brings an air of sophistication and elegance to all her endeavors.  Connie Grabowski's extensive experience in the health and medical field is very important in today's world. Connie is very gracious in sharing her knowledge with her family, friends and neighbors through her outreach from Jamaica Hospital. Connie serves as a valuable resource. We are very fortunate to have two such capable leaders. Sharon Gabriel and Connie Grabowski are strong believers in the Democratic Party.

This year in the Rockaways we have a special opportunity. We are fortunate to have Timothy Dufficy running for Judge in our district. Timothy Dufficy has an outstanding family. His wife, Mary, is a strong leader. She is bright, intelligent, hard working and compassionate.  She has a strong personal commitment to the democratic process and exhibited it by working diligently on the petition process.  Their daughter, Doreen and son, Timothy, are capable youngsters who are making a difference. Tim Dufficy is also following in the footsteps of his mother who served with distinction as an outstanding judge in Queens County.  His father had a reputation as the renowned attorney in New York State.

Our club members will be working for the re-election of Senator Malcolm A. Smith, Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer and Congressman Anthony Weiner. In addition, we will be working with the Honorable Timothy Dufficy toward electing him to represent our district as a very capable judge. We invite you to join us on the campaign trail.
