Rockaway's Special Olympics Program just concluded its fifth year of recreation and competitive training at its St. Camillus Training Site. Thirty-eight athletes and fifty-nine volunteer coaches enjoyed all of this year's activities, some of which included the following:
In February, ten athletes and their families went skiing at the Adaptive Sports Foundation at Windham Mountain.
Terence Burke, Patrick Carroll, John DiBartolomeo, Daniel Dory, Paul Fitzpatrick, Timothy Mullally, Laura Occhipinti, Joseph Orban, Jeffrey Resnick, and Elizabeth Sena enjoyed tubing on Friday night as well as the skiing. Flip Mullen, Maryellin Carroll and Jim McVeigh are volunteer coaches with the Windham Foundation and provided excellent guidance for the athletes. St. Camillus volunteers Rose Gurry, Christine Courtney, Sean Parchment, Andy and Matt Dory, Danielle Tesoriero, Danielle Mullen Kelly, Seamus Kirk, Shinann, Kilby and Bard Featherson, and Jen Tyne joined the fun. Everybody was treated to a casual buffet at Flip and Rita Mullen's ski house.
The group then marched in Rockaway's St. Patrick's Day Parade. The marchers included: Kevin and Anne Reilly and Kevin's friend Colin, Paul and Jack Fitzpatrick, Walter, Sr. and Walter, Jr. Ensor, Elizabeth and Frank Sena, Anthony Davis, Miriam Comacho, Timothy Mullally, Ellen Burns, Christine, John and Jack Mullally, Paul and Margaret DeVincenzo, Russell Houk, Kathy Clarke, Tom Ryan, Maureen and Joseph Gerard Featherston.
Next up was the St. Camillus St. Patrick's Dance where the athletes, their families and supporters did a lively jig. The dancers included: Liz and Celeste Sena, Danny and Mary Dory, John ad Lorraine DiBartolomeo, Jeff and Marion Resnick, Joe and Jane Orban, Paul Fitzpatrick and Regina Clark Fitzpatrick, Pat and Bethann Featherston, Virginia and John Courtney, Helene and John Flaherty, Helen and Chick Tolan, Maureen and Billy Henning, Joan Duffy, Rose and Mike Gurry, Sean Turbirdy, Kathy Clarke, Carol Kennedy and Joe Jenkusky, Sr. All the Olympians thank Bob Sommerfield for his hospitality and generosity.
The Rockaway and St. Camillus team traveled in April to Fordham University for the New York State Special Olympics Metro Basketball Games. Because of its previous successes, the full-court team was placed in a higher division and lost both its games to teams from Manhattan and Suffolk. The team's members who won fourth place ribbons were Terence Burke, Patrick Carroll, John BiBartolomeo, Walter Ensor, Joe Orban, Evan Russell, Liz Sena, Brian DeLury and Tommy Ryan.
The coach was Jay Burke. Eight other athletes competed in the individual skills competition in dribbling, shooting and passing. Kevin Reilly and Renee Sayour won gold medals, while Joseph D'Angelo, Anthony Davis, Paul DeVincenzo, Danny Dory, Paul Fitzpatrick and Laura Occhipinti won silver and bronze medals and ribbons. Christine Courtney, Sean Parchment and Kilby and Bard Featherston accompanied the athletes.
