Night Out Against Crime August 6

Night Out Against Crime August 6

Tuesday, August 6, has been designated National Night Out Against Crime, 2002. Rockaway's Night Out is turning out to be an entire "day at the beach." Although the main program begins at 6:30 p.m. on Beach 116th Street, other activities are planned for the afternoon - all in the spirit of the Rockaway community uniting to fight crime and keeping our neighborhood safe and secure.

Rockaway's Night Out, sponsored by the 100 Precinct Community Council, will kick off at 1 p.m. Geoff Rawling of the Rockaway Artist Alliance will be the lead artist in a project now known as the "Shack Attack." Children of all ages are invited to join in the redecorating of the lifeguard shack alongside the boardwalk at Beach 117 Street from    1 p.m. to 5 p.m. As all materials are being supplied, all you have to do is show up in clothing fit for four hours of painting. The "unveiling" of the redecorated lifeguard shack will take place during the Night Out program and all participating children present will be introduced.

Free identification photos and fingerprinting will be provided by Allstate Insurance's "SafeWise Kids" program beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Beach 116th Street. This program provides all parents and guardians the opportunity to have a complete statistical record of their children.

KTU 103.5 will host a beach party starting at 5:30 p.m. Free give-a-ways and lots of dance music will just be the start to a great night.

This year, Rockaway's Night Out will commence at 6:30 p.m. with a Hometown Heroes Parade starting at Beach 116th Street and Rockaway Beach Blvd. and marching down to the parking lot of the Beach Club. The Hometown Heroes Parade will honor the U.S. Armed Forces, NYPD, FDNY, EMS, and Volies. This parade will salute all uniformed and non-uniformed personnel, and their families, for their service to country and community during Sept. 11th and Nov. 12th (Flight 587).

Special units from the New York City Police Department, New York City Fire Department and other uniformed services will be present at the Night Out program offering special safety and crime prevention tips. Throughout the evening there will be games, a dunk tank, dance and martial arts demonstrations, an art exhibit by the RAA, and a D.J. playing popular tunes. In keeping with Rockaway's Night Out tradition, highlighting the evening will be fireworks at 9:00 p.m.

Save the date of Tuesday, August 6th on your calendar now and watch for future detailed announcements of the activities for Rockaway's Night Out Against Crime.
