The Third Year Surfing Camp Memorial for Kevin McNamee and Adrian Foley was another big success…the largest turnout ever. Accolades to John McNamee and Bobby Crowley and their entire staff of surfing teachers and workers. Children as young as four and five learn to surf for the first time during these three days set aside in July. This year the Dennis Farrell Dakota surfboard (custom made), was donated by Eleanor and John. And, the winner is, …John Biscaino, son of Kathleen and John Biscaino. Congratulations, John, ride it in safety. Kerry and Jimmy McCabe were also participants and mom, Jeanne McCabe, was proud of their performances.
And, what a block party it was on B. 220 Street this past weekend. Children and adults came from all of the walks.
Thanks to Linda and Tommy Welsh, along with their very hard workers and committee members and cooks, Tommy Smith, Tom McDonald, John Kane and Tommy Welsh. The food was fabulous. The music by DJ Paul Rudolf, Jr’s "Shake It Up" got everyone in a dancing mood especially the li’l ones. And the games they played were just fun, fun, fun for all the kids including their own, Bobby and Tommy Welsh, as well as watching adults such as: Barbara and Billy Genoese, guest of the Ross Family; Helen and Peter Danzilo guests of daughter, Maria and husband, Richard Lehav with their twins Clara and Peter and daughter, Hollis; Bob Zelek, father of Linda Welsh and his guests, Geraldine Dalton, Joe and Susan Ball, and Margaret and Barbara Dalton. So many familiar faces: Kathleen Conway looks just great; Patty Duffy, on someone’s deck; Bobbi and Craig Anderson with James (15 mos.) and Kate, 3 1/2 years; Maureen Harrison Givens; Dennis Fiorentino; Bernie Ross; Paul Rudolf, Sr. and wife Jessica; Paul and Ann Marie with son, Kieran and brother, Liam 1 year; Julianne and Mark Napolitano Jr. with children, Christopher and Loren, and Brian Rudolf, who is studying for the Bar exam. Brian graduated from Hofstra U. So many faces I can’t remember them all. Just good fun-filled neighborly people enjoying a happy get together.
Ellen and Lenny Wunder entertained Marge and Tom Murray at their cabana for a Martini reception and dinner a la Brennan & Carrs (I think Ellen’s going to put them out of business with her hot roast beef sandwiches). She’s the hostess with the mostest. Lenny’s grandchildren, Carl and Debbie Wunder and Jane Fontaine paid a visit. Ellen’s grandson, James Lysaght will be admitted to the American Bar Association on July 28. Her birthday was July 13 along with Tom Carroll and Maureen McKay. Patty Crowley from Breezy celebrates hers, Friday. July 19. Happy birthday to you all.
On the Bocci Court: Winners in Guys and Dolls were Shirley Hanrahan; John Hughes ad David Shelly; Sen Halligan and Joe Prince; Claire Heinze and Charlie Cassetta and Mae Malone and Ed Stackpole.
Well, thank God the Queens busses are rolling again. The Green line bus (which continued to run in Rockaway through the strike) does not have the best reputation for courteous drivers. However, I am happy to report one of the most courteous and politest bus drivers I have ever met who goes out of his way to please his passengers. He greets each passenger with a friendly welcome and does not drive by leaving a waiting person stranded. His name is John C. Haantaadts who has been a bus driver for over 32 years on the Green Line Bus Co. since 1970, and he deserves the "Kindest Bus Driver of the Year" award.. Green line should clone him. Believe me, they would have far less complaints if the line had more bus drivers like John Haanraadts. It was a pleasure being a passenger on his bus. John Haanraadts’ son, John Jr. is a Port Authority policeman. Hopefully the good genes of courtesy in his father have been passed on to him.
The Buckley/Kennedy Golf BBQ Outing at Riis Park turned out to be a good "Par Tee". Kennedy bartender, Tom Tully got "Closest to the Pin". It was well organized by Bob Zelek, Gerard Casey and Jimmy Buckley. It was so good they will have another next year.
Sunday, July 28, the Breezy Point Golden Age Club is presenting the Plaza Theatrical Production of "Fiddler on the Roof" at the St Thomas More Parish Hall. The price of $25 for members and $30 for non-members includes one drink and buffet dinner. Come one, come all. Call Renee Lacey.
Madison Square Park in the Iron District, NYC was a complete dump three years ago and now has blossomed into a beautiful little sanctuary for the workers and residents of that area. Target Art in the Park with City Park Foundation and City of New York Parks and Recreation each year, have brought art into this park for exhibition. This year you will see Dan Graham’s "Bisected Triangle, Interior Curve," the first work for a N.Y.C. Park. Mark Dion’s Urban Wildlife Observation Unit, a constructed urban ecological center that will allow park visitors to reexamine their surroundings by taking a closer look at the natural environment – If you are in and around the neighborhood take a walk through the park and enjoy the art that will be there through October 31.
