Not Just Basketball

The St. Francis de Sales Summer Classic program has been a vital part of the Rockaway community for the past 18 years. The program encompasses many children ranging in age from second graders all the way up through high school, but doesn’t stop there. There is a men’s and woman’s open league available to participate in after high-school, and we can’t well forget the ever famous Grey Beards for all those Rockaway men that are still just boys at heart.
Each team plays nightly games throughout the summer with hopes of making it to the play-offs and eventually the finals. The players of the winning teams each receive a commemorative long sleeve Summer Classic tee shirt and trophies to take home.
Kevin Raphael has been running the program for the past three years and describes the program as, "a hallmark in the community." He went on to say, "the games not only give our kids a chance to play competitively during the summer, but it also allows families to catch up with old friends and make new ones." He also mentioned that the games are what some families plan their summer vacations around.
The huge success of the program is largely due to the dedication of the sponsors. Year after year they provide the necessary support to keep the games running.
The school yard gets packed in night after night with families, friends, neighbors, and of course the players. Walking around the yard you are bombarded with smiling faces and friendly hello’s. The schoolyard on game night shows in its truest form the immense comradery of out special community.
Kevin Raphael would like to extend a special thanks to all that participate and help with the organization of the games on a nightly basis. He would also like to thank the sponsors again for their participation especially with everything that happened this year. All are invited to stroll down the schoolyard and enjoy a game or two.
