After budget issues and last minute wrangling, the Board of Education has announced that the Big Apple Games will come to Far Rockaway High School.

The announcement occurred only a few days before the scheduled July 1 opening date of the program. Les Sabbah, a teacher at Far Rock, and one of the coordinators of the program, said that a good turnout occurred.

"We had 125 kids turnout on July1. I was very happy with that turnout even if the information came through word of mouth."

The Big Apple Games, which is free to the community, will have two programs. The first program will contain the Teen Recreational Center, where kids from the ages of 13-21 can play in activities and games. Registration takes place from July 1-25, and the hours of the program will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Center will feature activities such as swimming and a game room. Gym activities will include but not limited to volleyball, hockey, basketball and other activities. The program will intend to have a carnival, barbecue, and games with distribution of prizes that will be handed out.

The second program of the Big Apple Games will contain the High School Competition Program. The registration also takes place from July 1-25 and the hours of the program will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kids who register must be entering or attending high school.

There will be programs for girls and boys in the following sports: basketball, volleyball, track and field and swimming. For boys, there will be a weightlifting competition. One of the intents of the program is to fill 9 teams that will face other centers and programs in various sport activities.

Though the program has already started, kids can still come down and register for this program. "It is a great experience for anyone who attends and if anyone is interested, come down and find out", Sabbah said.
