Drumming Up For Rockaway
By Lauren Raphael
An enthusiastic group of young musicians called the Loudoun Border Guards Fife & Drum Corps have traveled from Leesburg, Virginia, to Rockaway in order to put on a wonderful outdoor show themed, "America’s Spirit of Freedom." The group will be performing on Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m. in the St Francis de Sales school- yard free of charge in between games at the summer classic. The school is on Beach 129 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
Loudoun Border Guards Fife & Drum Corps will also be participating on July 9 in the Children’s Summer Safety Breakfast in the Ocean Room of the Beach Club. The breakfast is designed to give local children an opportunity to learn about being safe during the summer months. The group will be performing at 10:30 am July 9 in the parking lot of the Beach club for the open public after the breakfast.
The corps is under the direction of former Rockaway resident Anne (O’Malley) Quinn and her husband, Comac Quinn. Anne grew up in Rockaway and was a member of the St. Camillus Band family for many years. After September 11 and the loss of many of her friends, she decided that she wanted to do something for Rockaway and she decided to bring the group’s traveling summer concert tour to Rockaway.
The public is invited to partake in these fun summer festivities with our friends from Virginia. For more information contact 718-634-1300.
