Achieve Their Goals
Stella Maris’ Junior Varsity Softball team wound down their 2002 season by spending May 10th scoreboard watching. Or rather as close to that as you can come; that is waiting for phone calls reporting the outcome of 2 other games. Unfortunately, for the Lady Flippers, the results were contrary to the teams’ needs and SM was eliminated from post-season play. While one team goal was to make the play-offs, other team and/or individual goals were met.
The team’s batting average of .335 far surpassed the goal of .280. Likewise, the team’s On-base percentage of a whopping .391 (compared to the .310 projected water mark) showed the patience necessary to complete "good at bats". Called third strike outs were all but eliminated and base running continued to be aggressive.
Defensively, starting pitcher Krysten Gaines had an outstanding final-game appearance as she struck out 14 of 18 batters. Battery mate, Monica Curbelo, continued her strong play behind the plate and earning the nickname of "Cat" from the coaching staff’. The infield of Kelley McKinley (1st base), Jackie Kress (2nd), Julie Vicens (3rd), and Tara Vasselman (SS), solidified and played as a unit.
The outfield is probably where the most improvement was registered. The outfield corps of Tara Lynch, Ana Arguera, Jackie Geary, Marie Leddy, Kristi Popik, Katrina Van Sluyk and Kristeen Maguire provided the coaches with ample opportunity to mix and match positions. Each came up big in some way, shape or form. Last but not least was the return of power-hitting Kate O’Sullivan (ankle) in early May. Kate quickly manifested the slugging and fielding talents that had made her loss that much harder to absorb.
All in all, the J. V. Lady Flippers enjoyed a tremendous season. They were fun to watch, came together as a team and demonstrated the commitment and dedication necessary to excel on the high school level.
Flipper footnotes- Team Dad, Mr. Richie Kress, you were invaluable. Thanks from the entire team! To all the parents, family members and friends who supported us all year: our gratitude is boundless. To senior Kelly Fitz: thanks for making sure we looked great. See you next year.
