Stella Maris Fights Hard, But Falls Short

Stella Maris Fights Hard, But Falls Short

The Stella Maris High School Varsity Softball team concluded their 2002 season with a league record of 5-7. While so many players had tremendous seasons (statistically) there proved to be too many key injuries for the team as a whole to overcome.

First and foremost, the Lady Flippers started preseason with seniors Kelly Fitzgerald (ankle) and Liz Hurley (shoulder) coming of the disabled list. Then just one game into the season, senior Dana DiMarco (shoulder) went on the injured reserve and did not return to active duty until game 9 of the season. Sophomore Nicole Santoro was lost (broken thumb) for the entire season and Freshman Kristy Forcina (knee) missed the last 3 games. However, to paraphrase, there’s no crying in softball! SM’s senior squad made the best of every adversity thrown at them and compiled staggering individual achievements. The future is very bright and young. Ten of the 13 team members are either Sophomores or Freshmen.

Freshmen Kristy Forcina (SS), Kerry Harnisher (2nd) and Jennifer Seltzer (RF) combined for 19 RBI and On-Base percentages of .333, .375 and .400 respectively. Amanda Mazzereli, a mid-season addition amassed only 19 at-bats due to that fact. However, her On-Base % of .631 and 7 runs scored shows she made the most of every plate appearance. Liz Jablonski (outfield) continued her improvement in all aspects of the game and placed second on the team with runs scored (13). Trish DeAngelo (OB% of .441) and MaryCait Cunneen (OB% of .388) each contributed in various defensive positions throughout the year.

Janine Bordo (catcher) and Kelly Fitzgerald (CF) led the team in most offensive categories. Janine’s batting average of .523 and OB% of .591 were closely seconded by Kelly’s .458 and .527. In addition, both players had 24 RBI.

Defensively, everything starts and ends with the pitching. Kate Scotko had a fantastic year on the mound. In 80 innings of work, Kate compiled 91 strikeouts and a mere 15 walks. Offensively, she also contributed with 13 RBIs and a .307 batting average.

Coach Tom Landano gives special recognition to Team Dads: Ronnie Bordo, Jimmy DeAngelo, Mike Scotko, John Cunneen and Jim Hurley. Their assistance was greatly appreciated. The team, Mr. Landano, and the entire SM school community offer their heart-felt gratitude to Mr. Marty Andresen and the Rockaway Little League for the use of their facilities throughout the season!

Flipper Footnotes: A fond farewell to seniors Dana, Kelly and Liz: all of who will be attending college in the Fall! Congratulations, you will be missed. To Natalie DeSanctis: the team’s #1 fan. Thanks for being willing to suit up and all the support! Thanks to Mr. John Duggan for the use of your pitching machine. Hope you noticed the offensive numbers the team put up this year. The JV team summary will appear in next week’s edition. And finally, thanks to all of the parents, family members and friends who came and weathered the elements to offer their support.
