Remember Where You Came From

Remember Where You Came From

The attacks on the World Trade Center and the crash of Flight 587 have had a devastating effect on the Rockaway community. In looking back, we can take great pride in the way all members of the community came together, in a number of ways, to grieve and attempt to get back to a normal way of life. Sadly, there were those who did not join in the grieving process. A Wave reporter attempted to do a special feature on Hollywood celebrities who were born and raised in Rockaway, and the piece was going to focus on how they were emotionally impacted by 9/11 and the plane crash. Calls were placed to agents and publicity representatives for Far Rockaway native Alphonso Ribiero, who played "Carlton" on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," and others with ties to Rockaway. Not one call was returned! We will not fault the celebrities totally because some of them may have lousy staff members, and the messages may not have reached them. However, we do hold them accountable to a certain extent because if they really cared about where they came from, they would have taken a moment to issue a statement, or offer condolences to the community they were once part of, as soon as these earth-shattering events took place. Instead, they remained silent, and it's a shame. As the one-year anniversaries approach, we hope that these stars will allow themselves to become part of the community once again, if only for a day We invite them to come home on September 11, not for photo-ops or grandstanding, but to grieve with us, support us, and show that they are still very much a part of this community.
