ArtFrenzy Celebration Displayed Local Talent

ArtFrenzy Celebration Displayed Local Talent

Anyone who was wise enough to attend the Art Frenzy Celebration at Ft. Tilden on Sunday, June 9, 2002 was treated to a fantastic display of local talent. While all of the performers were energetic and entertaining, the students of P.S. 225, the Seaside School, on Beach 110 Street were most outstanding.

The Marching Band, under the direction of their music teacher Aminah Majied, marched on the grounds complete with flag-waving cheerleaders. But the highlight of the day was the sixth grade students who, under the direction of teacher Sharon Bien, presented an original display of poetry and dance. The poems were particularly poignant in light of the events this past school year. The individual students spoke of death and life and love and loss. They shared their personal tragedies and how so often they saw only the darkness ahead of them.

But the poetry went on to speak of life’s joys and how while sadness will come to all of us, it is within our power to find strength and faith to go on.

The students celebrated the need to love yourself first and then reach out to others. Ms. Bien and Ms. Majied, together with entire staff of P.S. 225 have worked tirelessly this year to help the children come to terms with life and what it means to all of us. Anyone in education this year can appreciate the difficult task presented with the events of September 11 and here in Rockaway, the crash of the airplane on Nov. 12, 2001.

The children in Rockaway have been profoundly affected. It is visible in their art work, their writings, even the nightmares that still haunt so many of them. P.S. 225 should be very proud of the children who created "Just Perfect." Their expressions of faith in tomorrow should give hope to so many of us.

P.S. 225’s principal, Mr. Matthew Melchiorre, shared with the Rockaway community some of the many accomplishments of the children on Thursday, June 13, 2002 in a special open house from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the school gym and auditorium.
