New Phone Dialing Pattern Set for 2003

New Phone Dialing Pattern Set for 2003

Saying "New York City’s ever increasing demand for phone numbers has made this change necessary," State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D- Queens) has announced that effective February 1, 2003, City residents will have to dial "1 plus the area code plus the phone number, even when calling a phone number in the same area code."

"The dialing system, which will affect the 212, 718, 646, 917 and 347 area codes, has been mandated by the Federal Communications Commission, which says there must be a uniform dialing practice when more than one area code serves the same geographic region," Senator Smith said.

The new area codes become necessary to accommodate the number of new businesses, cell phones, fax machines, pagers, modems, and additional lines in residences.

"To prepare for the new pattern, my constituents should reprogram their speed dial phones, computers and fax machines; update their business cards, stationery and other printed materials and inform friends, family, business associates, suppliers and other colleagues of the new dialing pattern," Senator Smith said.

He added that individuals who have questions about the new pattern should contact their local service provider by calling the number on their phone bill.
