Locals To Grace Art Frenzy

ArtFrenzy, the signature arts event of the Queens Council on the Arts is ready to sweep into the Rockaways this Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Come to Fort Tilden, Gateway National Recreation Area and enjoy the creative performances, exhibitions, parade, and cultural performances that will fill the park all weekend long. Queens Council on the Arts is pleased to present this free, family oriented arts festival with Gateway National Recreation Area, Friends of Gateway and feature park partners, the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the Rockaway Theatre Company and the Rockaway Music and Arts Council.

The main stage performances will include music and dance by Boedai, Chakra Shri, Inc., the Greek Demotik Folk Ensemble, Stan Brown Pepper Steppers, the New Izmir Music Machine, The Phyllis Rose Dance Company, Afghani Folk Music, the Soul Sisters Step Team, the Rockaway Theatre Company, Lia Lungu, the Korean Traditional Music Institute of NY, the Rajkumari Cultural Center, the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts, the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, Madan Madi, the Connelly Center for Performing Arts and Dance Sport, the Bangladeshi Cultural Academy, Ballet Los Pampas, Ensemble Shashmaqam and La 21 Division.

Special highlights include the vocal students of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts performing "The Dome of the Sky", a Queens Council on the Arts commissioned choral work by composer Charles Griffin in a premiere public performance. The Rockaway Theatre Company will be offering an exuberant selection of sketches and musical numbers including performances of Lend Me a Tenor, open auditions, living sculpture, poetry reading, and more. Look for them at the main stage, the Post Theatre, the Rockaway Moon outdoor stage, at Riis Landing and the Parking Lot Circle. On Sunday, the Rockaway Music and Arts Council will be presenting a wonderfully engaging production by Agostino Arts entitled, "Heads & Tales". This performance celebrates the history and art of face painting. Be sure to come back and enjoy one of the beloved Rockaway Music and Arts Council Sunset Concerts in Fort Tilden this summer. The studio buildings of the Rockaway Artists Alliance will be overflowing with art exhibits, mosaic and stained glass workshops, live music, an open mic, yoga and a children’s play. The Rockaway Moon Stage will feature performances by local artists, schools and performers.

Make sure to see the vintage car display of the Big Apple Region Car Club. The Rockaway Emergency Coastal Weather Alert will be set up in T-1, the Administration Building and there will be both art and craft vendors with an unusual selection of handmade items on Beach 169 Street, directly adjacent to the park.

Such local artists and craft vendors as Susan Locke (pottery), Arlene Cornell (watercolorist) and Steve Yaeger (who will be selling his paintings as well as his latest children’s book) will be on hand.

Nature lovers can delight in the natural resources of this beautiful seaside park on guided walking tours provided by the National Park Rangers. There is something for everyone this creative beachside event that celebrates the art, music and culture of southern Queens.
